Welcome aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad for a Personal Guide to America's Longest and Highest Narrow Gauge Steam Railroad.
The car in which you ride may have been built as recently as 1987 or it may be a converted freight car that once hauled supplies and equipment to the mines in the San Juan Mountains and ore concentrates from the mines to the smelters.
Nowhere else in the country can you experience the trill of seeing a secluded, virtually unspoiled area from an open gondola that once carried coal, ore, gravel, crushed rock or other freight.
So lets' step back into the late nineteenth century for a day, and enjoy the scenery and train trip as earlier tourist did, even though we are not on a fancy passenger train operated by the Denver and Rio Grande Railway Company (D&RG).
